9 Stress Reduction Techniques
Take a Break – Whatever you’re doing that’s causing you stress, step back for a few minutes to clear your mind, calm down and generally get calm, cool and collected once again. This will prepare you to cope with the situation when you return to it and allow you to face things with your full strength.
Exercise – All kinds of physical activity are helpful for reducing and eliminating stress, including jogging, bicycling, swimming, weightlifting, walking and so on. The more active you are, the less stress you’ll feel.
Laughter – It’s true what they say about laughter being the best medicine and even just smiling can help you to feel a little less stressed. Read or watch something funny or try to recall something humorous that happened to you in the past.
Treat Yourself - Treat yourself to a little something once in a while; it really does work to help relieve stress. Whether it’s a small purchase you’ve been wanting to make or even something as small as a cup of tea, go ahead and do it. Enjoying yourself takes your mind off of the things that are causing you stress and helps you feel a little more relaxed.
Organization – One common reason for stress is having a lot of responsibilities and work which builds up and in many cases, this can be alleviated with some organization. Plan, prioritize and take on the most important tasks one at a time rather than just worrying about the big picture. Break things down into manageable steps and you may be surprised by how easily you can get it all done – and by how much better you’ll feel.
Say No – It won’t mean the end of the world if you say no to people once in a while. You have to decide which things are truly important and when to say no before you push yourself beyond your limits. Keep in mind that you should be your own highest priority – since if you fail to take care of yourself, there’s no way you can take care of anybody else. When you’re able to take care of yourself first, then you can consider doing some things for others.
Ask for Help – If you ask someone else for help, it doesn’t mean that you’re weak. It means that you’re secure enough and wise enough to know your limits and know when you need to seek out the assistance of others. You might be surprised by how eager others are to lend you a hand if you just ask.
Get Enough Sleep – There is no substitute for getting the rest you need. While you should not oversleep, you should make the time to get the rest you need if you find that you’re not getting enough or that you’re not getting the restful sleep you need to be energized and refreshed in the morning. Giving yourself permission to take the time you need to get enough sleep isn’t just OK; it is vital to your physical and mental well being.
Spend Time With Family and Friends – Spending time with those you care about and who care about you can go a long way towards reducing your stress level and in fact, the benefit goes both ways, so make time for this no matter how busy you might be.
